Frequently Asked Questions

I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. Asking for help takes courage and self-awareness. Everyone needs support at times, and therapy is a space to explore your strengths, gain new perspectives, and develop tools to manage the challenges you’re facing.

What’s the difference between talking to a therapist and talking to a friend or family member?

Friends and family care about you, but a trained mental health professional offers skills and guidance to help you approach challenges in new ways. Therapy provides a confidential, non-judgmental space to gain perspective, learn coping strategies, and listen to yourself. It also ensures you have professional support when emotions feel overwhelming, without straining personal relationships.

Shouldn't I just take medication?

Medication can be helpful for certain concerns, but it often works best alongside counseling. Therapy allows you to explore underlying issues, build coping skills, and strengthen personal resources—things medication alone cannot address.

How does therapy work? What are sessions like?

Therapy is tailored to you. Sessions may include talking, skill-building, problem-solving, and exploring thoughts and emotions in ways that support your goals. Your therapist will guide you in approaches that best fit your needs.
